Cisco gives detailed information on EFM and its deployment technologies in a recent Whitepaper titled "Metro Ethernet Switching Solution for Service Providers / Ethernet in the First Mile".
This paper explains the First Mile characteristics, EFM drives and the three targeted subscriber access network topologies (p2mp fiber (EPON), p2p fiber, p2p copper).
EPON seems to offer the best price/performance characteristics.
